The Best Neighborhoods in Atlanta, GA for Every Buyer
Atlanta is a city of villages, and the right one depends on how you live. A commuter wants a short drive to the interstate. A family wants school ratings and a yard. A buyer with a $250,000 budget wants a different map than one shopping at $2 million. We scored 30 Atlanta neighborhoods on Movoto data and public sources so you can compare them side by side.
Key takeaways
- Best overall: Midtown (8.2), followed by Ansley Park, Home Park, Brookwood Hills, and Garden Hills.
- Best for commuters: Collier Hills, with Home Park and Midtown close behind.
- Best for families: Lake Claire, then Candler Park and Chastain Park.
- Best for young professionals: Midtown, Home Park, and Collier Hills.
- Best value: Brookwood Hills, Ansley Park, and Morningside-Lenox Park.
- Best for luxury buyers: Tuxedo Park and Chastain Park, the only two neighborhoods that met our luxury threshold.
- Best for pet owners: Midtown, Home Park, and Cabbagetown.
How we ranked Atlanta’s neighborhoods
Each neighborhood received a 0 to 10 score on affordability, price appreciation, school quality, safety, walkability, food and dining, kid-friendliness, and commute time. Movoto supplied the walk, food, kid, and pet scores, average prices, and GreatSchools ratings. We added 2025 crime rates from Atlanta Police Department data, commute times from the American Community Survey, and 2025 appreciation from FHFA ZIP-code price indexes. Each “best for” list reweights those scores for that audience. Full methodology is at the end.
Best Atlanta neighborhoods overall
1. Midtown (score 8.2)
Average price: $359K | Walk score: 98 | Median days on market: 76
Midtown pairs near-perfect walkability with Piedmont Park, the High Museum, and a dense restaurant corridor. It is condo-heavy, which keeps prices low for an urban core, and its 25-minute average commute is among the shortest we measured. Crime per resident runs higher than in the residential neighborhoods nearby, a common pattern in busy commercial districts.

2. Ansley Park (score 8.2)
Average price: $729K | Walk score: 68 | Median days on market: 52
Ansley Park offers winding, tree-lined streets and historic homes next to Midtown. It posted some of the strongest 2025 appreciation in our set and one of the shortest commutes, at about 23 minutes. Active listings are thin, so expect limited choice.

Best historic neighborhoods in Atlanta (editorial pick)
This section is editorial and not part of the scoring. Atlanta lost much of its early architecture, but several intown neighborhoods kept their historic fabric. Inman Park was one of the first planned suburbs in the South, with Victorian homes from the 1880s. Ansley Park followed in the early 1900s with curving streets designed around Piedmont Park. Grant Park adds Victorian and Craftsman homes beside Zoo Atlanta, and Cabbagetown grew up as a mill village around the old Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill.
Bottom line
Midtown wins overall on walkability, short commutes, and a low entry price, while Ansley Park, Home Park, Brookwood Hills, and Garden Hills round out the top five. Families should start with Lake Claire and Candler Park, and buyers with a larger budget should look at Tuxedo Park and Chastain Park. Always check current listings and school boundaries before you buy.
Methodology and data notes
We scored 30 neighborhoods from 0 to 10 on each criterion using min-max normalization, with price, crime, and commute inverted so lower is better. The overall score weights affordability 15%, appreciation 10%, schools 15%, safety 15%, walkability 15%, food 15%, kid-friendliness 5%, and commute 10%. Each category list reweights these inputs, and the score shown beside each neighborhood is its score for that list.
- Movoto data: walk, food, kid, and pet scores, average prices, GreatSchools ratings, and market trends (median price, price per square foot, days on market, active listings).
- Crime: 2025 Atlanta Police Department reports per 1,000 residents, by neighborhood. Rates run high in commercial districts such as Downtown and Midtown because the resident base is small.
- Commute: average travel time to work estimated from American Community Survey block-group data.
- Appreciation: 2025 annual change in the FHFA house price index, mapped from ZIP codes. Where a ZIP code was missing (Downtown and Castleberry Hill), we used a nearby ZIP as a proxy.
- Schools: averages of up to three GreatSchools ratings. Downtown, Castleberry Hill, Home Park, and Atlantic Station had none, so they are excluded from the family ranking.
- Limitations: Buckhead is a composite of several areas for crime and commute and has a very low walk score. Downtown, East Atlanta Village, Adair Park, and Reynoldstown use average price only, and Brookwood Hills, Chastain Park, Tuxedo Park, Collier Hills, and Ansley Park had few active listings. Tree cover was not available.
