Dylan Dreyer Opens Up About Heartbreaking Miscarriage: ‘Crying in My Bed in So Much Pain’

"Today" show co-host Dylan Dreyer has revealed that she quietly endured a secret miscarriage while she was away from home, on a vacation where she hid her pregnancy from her fellow travelers.

The 44-year-old reflected on the emotional experience during an episode of her podcast, "The Parent Chat," where she welcomed former "Bachelor" star Nick Viall and his wife, Natalie Joy. The couple have also spoken candidly about their own pregnancy losses.

Dreyer explained that she was on a "group" trip when the heartbreaking loss occurred, detailing how she tried desperately to conceal the news from those around her.

“I’ve suffered one miscarriage, and I remember, we were kind of on a group vacation. So, there was just like a lot of people around, and everybody’s happy, everybody’s on vacation," the "Today" star recalled.

At the time, she was concealing her pregnancy from friends and family, pretending to drink alcohol to avoid raising any suspicion, she explained.

“I remember also hiding the fact that I was, in addition to hiding the fact that I was pregnant, dealing with this miscarriage, and I’m surrounded by people,” she said.

Despite being surrounded by loved ones, Dreyer admitted she felt completely isolated.

There was “literally no one” she could confide in about what she was going through, she said.

“I’m crying in my bed in so much pain, because no one really tells you how painful, physically painful, it is,” she shared. “And I’m like, ‘Man, I wish I could share this with someone,’ and you can’t always do that.”

Dreyer is mom to three sons—Cal, 9, Ollie, 6, and Rusty, 4—whom she shares with Brian Fichera. The couple, who wed in 2012, separated in July 2025, and the "Today" host officially filed for divorce in March of this year.

It's unclear when exactly Dreyer suffered her miscarriage; however, she hinted that it happened after she gave birth to her oldest son, but before she got pregnant with her second. She explained later in the episode that she eventually discovered she was suffering from secondary infertility as a result of scar tissue in her uterus.

The scarring had prevented her from conceiving another child after she welcomed Cal, she explained. It also led to multiple miscarriages.

"My uterus was scarred shut," she explained. "There was a reason why I kept having miscarriages, and I couldn’t have any more kids."

Dreyer underwent a procedure to remove the scar tissue and was then able to conceive her second and third sons.

During the discussion, Joy—who just welcomed twins with Viall—also lifted the lid on her own miscarriage, explaining why she decided to go public with the heartbreaking situation, sharing the news in an episode of "The Viall Files," the podcast that she hosts with her husband.

She noted that although she "did not necessarily" believe she owed fans an explanation, they created "a very safe space for us."

As for why she chose to speak out about it, Joy confessed that, at the time, she was unsure how to return to the podcast without addressing it.

“How do I talk pop culture? ... You know, like this is just real-life things that are happening to me and I can’t go on this show and act like they’re not,” she said.

Since launching her own podcast, "The Parent Chat," in March, Dreyer has tackled a number of difficult parenting topics—including the guilt that she feels for hiring a nanny to help her care for her three children.

On an April episode of the show, the mom of three and her guest, Erin Andrews, spoke about the difficulties of balancing motherhood with a successful career, with the "Today" show host admitting that she was "embarrassed" at times to have a nanny.

"I read an article where you were quoted in it," Dreyer told Andrews. "[You] were saying it’s almost embarrassing, sometimes, to admit that you have a nanny, and it’s wild because my oldest—we’ve had our nanny since he was 3 months old. Because I do work full time."

The on-air personality then revealed that her own need for a nanny comes from the fact that she doesn't have many family members nearby.

“My parents don’t live close. My mom’s in Florida. My brother’s in Oregon. My other brother’s in Florida. My in-laws are up in Boston. It used to be where you lived in a community. You lived in a neighborhood where your family was close by, and you had people that could watch your kids for you.”

She continued, “Trust me, I would love to not have to pay somebody to help me watch my kids. But at the same time, I couldn’t have the career I have, and I love my job. I’ve been doing it, like, half my life, I’ve been doing this job.”

"And you should," Andrews responded. "You should be able to. I want my kids to see me working hard and making the sacrifices, yet cooking dinner or doing what I can at home. But I do think there’s nothing wrong with having a village to help you get it done.”

Dreyer then explained that it's important for her fans to know that they need help because it sets "unrealistic expectations for the mom who’s sitting there struggling.”

The mother of three currently resides in a suburb outside of New York City, revealing in November that she had quit her life in Manhattan to relocate to a quieter neighborhood with her three children.

Her announcement came just days after she secured a buyer for her longtime home in the Big Apple—having slashed a half-million dollars from her asking price.

Dreyer and Fichera originally listed their marital abode, where they were raising their three sons, in November 2024 with an asking price of $2.49 million. They ultimately sold it for the much lower price of $1.8 million.
